From its very first editions, the most prestigious global scientific publication, Nature, wrote enthusiastically about the Transylvanian Experimental Neuroscience Summer School (TENSS), highlighting it as “a rare beacon of research excellence in Romania” and a story that has inspired many top scientists from around the world to join the project, which takes place in the wonderful setting of Pike Lake, in Transylvania.

TENSS

Professors from Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Max Planck, Heidelberg University, University College London, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Oxford, Stanford, some of the most appreciated neuroscientists, including Nobel laureates, have come to train the next generation of elite brain researchers. Over the 11 editions organized so far, 145 early-career researchers have benefited from exceptional and unique international mentoring at TENSS, with the simultaneous presence of so many prestigious researchers from labs, institutes, and universities around the world.

TENSS

It's a bet we’re taking that, before too long, the research of this elite network formed at TENSS will substantiate therapies for neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, schizophrenia, epilepsy, for various mental disorders such as autism or depression, or will improve the cognitive performance of every individual, going as far as the scenario, only seemingly science fiction, of controlling electronic instruments with the mind.

The same Nature article, however, pointed out that TENSS will need generosity from both neuroscientists and government in order to continue. Unfortunately, globally, support for neuroscience summer schools has lost major funders in a way that is quite surprising given the challenges of the contemporary world that neuroscience is addressing. And research funding in Romania is super-deficient, even when it comes to elite projects and initiatives with visible and measurable results.

Thus, with less than two months to go before the start of the 12th edition (1 June 2024), we are in the situation of registering a shortfall of €45,000 of the total costs, estimated at €125,000, of this year’s edition of TENSS. In order to give a new generation of promising young researchers the chance to train and join the ranks of elite researchers, and to be able to continue TENSS in the years to come, we need your support now.
